The No. 1 Birkbeck Hand Camera was manufactured by E. G. Platt from approximately 1891 to 1900. It was a good quality hand magazine camera made of mahogany wood, covered in the best leather. It was fitted with a fixed focus lens, iris diaphragm and a time and instantaneous shutter. It featured two view finders and a door with a lock and key. The magazine was operated with a knob located at the top of the camera which also provided the exposure count. Exposed plates were removed by drawing a bolt which releases the a door at the bottom, without interfereing with the unexposed plates. The camera measured 8 x 7 x 4 and weighed 3 1/4 pounds. It was priced at £2 2d 0d.
