Dating Kodak glass plates.

Postby langan@indigo.ie » Tue Nov 09, 2010 2:09 am

Hi all,
I came across a box - unopened - of Kodak Plates(Glass) 5x4 inch with 12 plates. The type is P2000 Press Special.
Apart from a code on the side - AK156 98 - (this could be an emulsion batch number as with modern large format films).
To date the Kodak web site has not given me any idea as to when this box of plates was manufactured.
Could anyone suggest a route to take to find out manufacturing periods. I see that Kodak started producing roll film around 1913 but presumably were still producing glass plates well beyond that time.

Thank you in advance.

From what I can gather the Kodak P.2000 Press Special plate was introduced in May 1953. A few old periodicals indicated that they represent some of the fastest negative materials in the world (for that time). Used for poorly lighted shots. I have not seen any collector value to date for unexposed plates.

Regards,
Tom

Thanks for the reply Tom. I really appreciate that. Do you think Kodak was still making glass plates as late as 1953?
I also have a box of P.1600Panchro-Royal 5x4 glass plates with a code HP27K 11. And another unopened box of 12 4x5 sheets Panchromosa 32º with stamp/code 10385A.
And I misquoted the code on the P2000 Special Press glass plates it should be AK15G 98.

Thanks again for your reply.
Eugene.
